Holy Cross Day
Known as “Holy Cross Day” in much of the Anglican Communion, this major feast of the Church reminds us to boast in nothing “except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Galatians 6:14). It is clearly an important symbol for the Church, certainly after 330AD when a remnant of the Cross was purportedly found in the Holy Land. After all, we regularly make the sign of the cross, and many of us bow to the cross in our liturgy.
"Almighty God, whose Son our Saviour Jesus Christ was lifted high upon the Cross that he might draw the whole world to himself: Mercifully grant that we, who glory in the mystery of our redemption, may have grace to take up our cross and follow him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen".
On Sunday we welcome Willow and Ben into God's church through the sacrament of Holy Baptism.

Accommodation
Many of you are aware that the Parish has two blocks of villa homes nearby on land bequeathed to us for the provision of accommodation to the 'poor and aged' of Brighton. These properties are leased to and administered by the Department of Housing, but I am able to nominate who should be offered accommodation. To be eleigible, a person must be on the Department's housing list (meaning their income level meets the Department's requirements) and be over 55 years of age. It is necessary for applicants to consent to a Police Check so I can see that they are suitable to be neighbours for those already living there, some of whom are parishioners at St Andrew's. The Parish maintains a list of potential candidates and from this we nominate a new resident when a vacancy occurs.
If you know of some who might appreciate being part of these two communities and who is eligible, please let me know through the Parish Office office@standrewsbrighton.org.au.
Coffee + Chat
On Wednesday we had our Coffee + Chat in the Pioneer Chapel (out of the wind) and Mike Hanneberry spoke about his time as a firefighter and also showed us his equipment!
Rohini Jayaratne, whom we farewelled on Sunday, was able to join us for Coffee + Chat.
The Duigan Centre
Brighton Grammar have announced that the new building on our tennis court site, which we have been calling 'the Exchange Building' and which will house the school's 'Centre for Science, Creativity and Entrepreneurship', is to be named the Duigan Centre (pronounced Dwee-gan) when it is officially opened on 27 February 2025.
It is named after John Robertson Duigan MC (31 May 1882 – 11 June 1951), an Australian pioneer aviator who built and flew the first Australian-made aircraft, and a replica plane will hang in the atrium of the Centre. Watch this explanatory video from the Headmaster.

Last weekend we celebrated birthdays for Nick Stretch, seen here conducting the choir in a redition of 'Happy Birthday to me', and also Val Comport whom we and her family congratulated at Sat@6 and also over dinner afterwards at the New Bay Hotel.
