François-Joseph Navez The Incredulity of Saint Thomas 1823

St Thomas

A "doubting Thomas" is a common idiom used to describe a skeptic who refuses to believe something without direct, personal, or empirical evidence. The phrase originates from the biblical account of the Apostle Thomas in the Gospel of St John. According to the narrative, Thomas was not present when the resurrected Jesus first appeared to the other disciples. Upon hearing the news, he famously refused to believe unless he could see the nail marks in Jesus’ hands and touch his wounds.

When Jesus appeared to the disciples a week later, he specifically accommodated Thomas's need for physical proof. After Thomas saw and felt the wounds, he believed and exclaimed, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus then offered the beatitude: "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe."
