St Andrew's Day
The 183rd anniversary of the first Anglican service in Brighton
In the Eastern Orthodox Church St Andrew is known as the Prōtoklētos, 'the first called', as in St John's gospel he was the first apostle called by Jesus to follow him. Andrew was a fisherman and, with his brother, Simon Peter, Jesus called them to be 'fishers of men'.
Andrew is said to have been martyred by crucifixion at the city of Patras (Patræ) in Achaea, Greece, in AD 60. A tradition developed that Andrew had been crucified on a crux decussata (X-shaped cross, or "saltire"), now commonly known as a "Saint Andrew's Cross" — supposedly at his own request, as he deemed himself unworthy to be crucified on the same type of cross as Jesus had been.
St Andrew is the patron saint of Middle Brighton, Scotland, Russia and Greece.
