Pietro Perugino’s Christ Giving the Keys of the Kingdom to St. Peter is an exemplar of Italian Renaissance painting. The work was part of a large decorative program commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV in 1481 for the walls of the Sistine Chapel (the name “Sistine” being derived from Sixtus’ own name), which was then, as it is today, the pope’s private chapel in the Vatican, in Rome.
The painting shows the moment when Christ, standing in the centre dressed purple and blue garments, gives the keys of the heavenly kingdom to the kneeling St. Peter. This episode comes from the Gospel of Matthew (16:18-19) as Christ said to Peter: “And I tell you that you are Peter (Petros), and on this rock (petra) I will build my church… I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven….” The pair of gold and silver keys became Saint Peter’s attribute - aiding the viewer in identifying the St Peter.

Choral Evensong

Nicene Creed 1700th anniversary
This year marks the 1700th anniversary the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea, and the promulgation of the Nicene Creed, the enduring symbol and summary of Christian faith.
To mark this significant event our friends at All Saints East St Kilda will celebrate a special service at 5:00 pm on Sunday 6th July 2025. The service will take the form of Choral Evensong and will feature some magnificent music including the ‘Credo’ from Joseph Haydn’s ‘Nelson Mass’. The Reverend Doctor Mike Bird, assistant Principal at Ridely and Lecturer in Theology, will preach. A reception of light refreshments will be provided following the service.

To further mark this anniversary, we will be conducting some study sessions in August to discuss the various creeds of the Church. These will commence on Sunday 3 August at 11.30am in the Parish Hall.

Car Blessing
During the week I had the pleasure of blessing a new car for a Brighton resident, Bridget. We wish her many happy years of motoring.

Kids' Church
There is no Kids' Church next Sunday as it is school holidays.
Our next get together will be on 3 August @ 11.130am.

Safe Ministry
During the week Mthr Xeverie ran a course of Safe Ministry requirements for new Chinese parishioners so that they are able to assist with volunteering at church events. If you have not yet done the Level 1 training and don't relish doing it on-line, please contact Angela so we can book you in for Xev's training in English.
