St James, Apostle and martyr
St. James the Apostle, also known as James the Great, was the first apostle to be martyred. He was the son of Zebedee and Salome, and the brother of the Apostle John. James was known for his zeal and was part of Jesus' inner circle (Peter, James and John), witnessing significant events like the raising of Jairus' daughter and the Transfiguration. He was executed by King Herod Agrippa I in 44 AD, according to the Book of Acts. His remains reputedly lie within the Catedral de Santiago de Compostela in Spain, consecrated in 1211.
