Lent 1
Quadragesima

Chinese Sichuan Opera - the 'quick face-change performers' at our Lunar Festival last Saturday
Quadragesima Sunday marks a significant moment in the Christian year - the first Sunday in the liturgical season of Lent. In medieval Europe, it signaled the intensification of fasting and abstinence, with the faithful refraining from meat, dairy, and other luxuries throughout Lent. Sermons often focused on Christ’s victory over temptation, encouraging believers to emulate His discipline. The day also held communal importance, as parishes gathered to begin the Lenten journey together.

Lunar festival last Saturday

St Andrew's marked the Lunar New Year with a very polished festival in the church foregrounds. A huge thank you for all for assisting in making the morning run so professionally. A special thank you to Mother Xev who brought it all together on the day. The event was formally opened by Councillor Hannah El Mouallen (representing the Mayor of Bayside City Council), James Newbury MP (State member for Brighton) and Mr Guy Mainwaring (representing the Church Street traders Association). We gratefully acknowledge Bayside City Council and the Church Street Traders for the support of this event.

Listening in Lent

As we approach Lent, the Archbishop has enjoined us to begin preparing for Listening in Lent - a season of intentional, prayerful listening across our Diocese. This will help him discern the vision and direction of our mission for the next ten years. Listening in Lent offers a focused opportunity to listen together to God, to one another, and to the communities we are called to serve.
There will be two primary ways to participate:
- through a simple online questionnaire which you can complete in their own time
- and through a facilitated conversation where people reflect and listen together - this will be held on Saturday 28 February at 10am - 11.30am in the Parish Hall. Refreshments will be provided.
The Listening in Lent page is for everyone - click here
This is where you can watch a short introduction by the Archbishop and take part by completing the online questionnaire. The questionnaire is open to anyone, takes around 10–15 minutes.
I hope you will be able to join me on Saturday 28 February.
