Epiphany 6

Lunar New Year celebrations @ St Andrew's
Last Saturday the church grounds and Church Street were abuzz with celebration of the Lunar New Year, with cultural displays by all our Chinese friends in Bayside as they welcomed in the 'year of the snake'. Colour, movement, singing and dancing were aplenty at this amazing display of skill and nuance by many performers, including our own parishioners. There were back-to-back onstage performances, children's stalls, traditional lion dances and a spectacular dancing dragon weaving it's way from the St Andrew's to rove Church Street.
Many thanks to Mother Xeverie for her organisation of this successful event and to all those who assisted in the many roles necessary to put on such a huge undertaking.

The Duigan Centre
The doors from St Andrews St and from Church St into the Vicars' Cloister and the eastern courtyard will be unlocked between 7am - 5pm daily at this stage. We can arrange for later opening times depending on the use of the church and parish hall for events.

The Churchwardens have agreed to sublease the rooftop tennis courts and pavillion to Brighton Grammar, and in turn, the school have agreed to discuss the use of this area with St Andrew's Tennis Club. The hours of the doors to the Vicars' Cloister may subsequently change to give access to the rooftop lifts to facilitate access for night play. We trust that an arrangement can be found to suit both the club and the school.
The formal opening of The Duigan Centre is on 27 February (by invitation only). There will be an open morning on Saturday 1 March for BGS families, which includes St Andrew's parishioners.
Vale
Norman Barrow has died and his funeral will be at St Andrew's on Wednesday at 10.30am. Our condolences to Faye and her family.
New Bible Study starts
On Sunday a new bible study group will be offered in the Parish Hall following refreshments after the 10am service. This is part of our Hope 25 initiatives, equipping us all to recognise the Christian hope that we hold in this uncertain world.
At this time during Lent and Advent will be run our studies on topics relevant to those church seasons as usual.

Hope25 is a National Anglican movement to encourage us together to share the gospel of Jesus. We have plans underway for special services and activities to do this between Easter and Pentecost. This is one of our initiatives.
The Gospel of St Luke
This year, 2025, is Year C in our church lectionary - the three year cycle of readings used by major Christian denominations. It is the year that most readings are taken from the Gospel of St Luke. In the narthex there are some copies of that Gospel provided by the Diocese and you are welcome to take a copy. It is not from the translation of the New Testament which we use in our services (New Revised Standard Version) but an US version (New International Version) used by many evangelical churches using words which suit their particular interpretation of scripture. However, the Gospel of Luke is not controversial so this text is unlikely to lead you astray from the standard version.

Antisemitism and our Shabbat meal
The news is full of antisemitic activity which challenges who we are as Australians, what values we hold, and what we permit in our society. This week, a shameful video by two immigrant nurses in Sydney appalled the country. Our own sign (below) has garnered over 100 unprompted responses from local Jewish people thanking us for our support in this stressful time for Jewish Australians.

The Australian Anglican Bishops' statement is below.

All Australians are entitled to live here in peace no matter what their views might be about international relations. Now more than at any time since World War 2, our Jewish brothers and sisters need our support about life here. Our attendance at the Shabbat meal is intended to show that support no matter what personal views might be about overseas conflict. Please register to attend if you haven't already done so or message me on 0421321321 or vicar@standrewsbrighton.org.au and I will arrange a ticket for you.
