Forgiveness plays a large part in our Christian life. It is a statement we make each time we say the Lord's Prayer. In the Gospel reading for this weekend, the angry king punishes the unforgiving servant. Jesus concludes that God will treat anyone who does not forgive from the heart in the same way. It is easier to understand forgiveness in terms of a money debt, but we find it harder to forgive when the action of someone has caused us and the community harm in other ways, particularly where there is no repentance for that act. Forgiving does not mean that the slate is wiped clean as if nothing never happened. Forgiving a debt does not mean that the default is forgotten and that we will lend to that person again. But we can forgive those who do wrong by us even when their hearts are hardened and they are unable to forgive, pursuing revenge instead. Forgiving doesn't mean we forget what happened. It means we do not let the debt or action consume our thinking and distort our lives. Forgiving means we are able to move on, even if a bit poorer for the experience. God forgives us our sins where we are truly repentant, but we have to change our ways so that we try to sin no more. Otherwise our claim of repentance is disingenuous.
