Pentecost 6 - the last Sunday before Lent

Quinquagesima

Fra Angelico 1387–1455: The Sermon on the Mount 1436-1443

Quinquagesima is the last Sunday before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent in the traditional Western Christian calendar. Meaning "fiftieth" in Latin, it signifies the 50-day countdown to Easter using inclusive counting. Often called Shrove Sunday, it marks the start of Shrovetide, transitioning from Christmas/Epiphany to the penitential Lenten season. Traditionally it is the day that stored meat is consumed in readiness for fasting during Lent. Similarly, the eggs and butter are consumed on Tuesday (Shrove Tuesday = Pancake Tuesday).

Measles in Brighton

The Chief Health Officer (Vic) has provided a long list of measles public exposure sites in Victoria email included sites in Brighton - Dendy Plaza, Coles and PO - someone who was infectious was there for a short time last Thursday 5/2 (and presumably in the street / car park to get there) - see below for details/times. IF you are fully vaccinated (2 doses) risk of catching measles is extremely low, but if exposed you should still monitor for symptoms so thought it best you were aware ... More details on what to look for/do below the table.

Anyone who has attended a listed exposure site during the specified dates and times may have been exposed to measles and are advised to:

  • monitor for symptoms of measles for up to 18 days after your visit - symptoms usually start with fever, cough, runny nose, red or sore eyes or feeling generally unwell. This is usually followed by a rash which often starts on the face before spreading down the body

  • seek medical care and testing if symptoms develop. Please call the health service beforehand, inform them that you may have been exposed to measles and wear a face mask

  • if you have not received two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (MMR vaccine) or are unsure, please contact your GP as you may be recommended to receive preventive treatment. This works best when given soon after being exposed, usually within 72 hours (with MMR vaccine) or up to 6 days (with immunoglobulin for at-risk groups such as young infants, pregnant women and immunocompromised people).

Vale

We remember before God the late Judy Oakley, whose funeral will be held in the church next Thursday at 2pm.

May she rest in peace and rise in glory

Baptisms

Please pray for young River and Isla who are being baptised into the Church of God on Sunday at 11.30am.

Listening in Lent

As we approach Lent, the Archbishop has enjoined us to begin preparing for Listening in Lent - a season of intentional, prayerful listening across our Diocese. This will help him discern the vision and direction of our mission for the next ten years. Listening in Lent offers a focused opportunity to listen together to God, to one another, and to the communities we are called to serve.

There will be two primary ways to participate:

- through a simple online questionnaire which you can complete in their own time

- and through a facilitated conversation where people reflect and listen together - this will be held on Saturday 28 February at 10am - 11.30am in the Parish Hall. Refreshments will be provided.

The Listening in Lent page is for everyone - click here

This is where you can watch a short introduction by the Archbishop and take part by completing the online questionnaire. The questionnaire is open to anyone, takes around 10–15 minutes.

I hope you will be able to join me on Saturday 28 February.
