Vicar's News - 12 June 2022

Vale

Of your charity, pray for the soul of Douglas Meagher QC, long-time supporter of this parish and of our music foundation. Doug, with Rosemary, was a regular attender and reader at the 8am service. Our sincere condolences and best wishes to Rosemary and their family.

Doug's funeral will be on Thursday at 10am in the church.

Of your charity, pray for the soul of Anne 'Margaret' Hanlon, long-time parishioner and regular attender at Sat@6 and our mid-week service. Our sincere condolences to all of Margaret's family. She will be greatly missed.

Margaret's funeral will be on Friday at 2pm in the church.

'May Margaret and Douglas both rest in peace and rise in glory'.

Please also pray for Peter Harvie, Stephen Waters and Rodney Bunning who have died recently and whose private services are being held at St Andrews, remembering also their families at this time.

Child Safety on-line tutorials

If you have been asked to do an on-line tutorial for child safety, I will be running a Level 1 tutorial for those who do not have internet or anyone who wishes to do it in a group, on Tuesday at 2pm in the Parish Meeting Room. Thank you to those who have already completed theirs on line.

Trinity Sunday

This Sunday the 10am service will be celebrated by Xeverie using the normal sung Eucharist service with a thanksgiving prayer for use by her, as deacon, using reserved sacrament. Xev has used this liturgy as both our Wednesday and Sat@6 services. I will conduct the 8am service but will attending a Trinity luncheon mid-morning.

Brighton Covenant Churches

It was a pleasure to have Maurice Phibb's from St Finbar's read the lessons last week at our 10am service for Pentecost. Our neighbour, the Reverend Paul Carr at St Stephen's Gardenvale, is undergoing a series of operations on his leg and back, and will be out of commission for a while. We will be assisting St Stephen's from time to time over the next couple of month's to ensure Paul has priestly support during his convalescence.

Corpus Christi

The feast of Corpus Christi (the body of Christ) will be celebrated on Thursday 16 June at 6.16pm at St Peter's Eastern Hill. We are invited to this colourful service which includes benediction, communion and a procession of the Holy Sacrament through Parliament Gardens and back to the church. I will be the celebrant at the service at the kind invitation of Bishop David Farrer and all are invited to attend. If you haven't been to such a service, it is worth attending. If it is too cold, you can opt to stay in the church rather than follow the procession. We, too, will be celebrating Corpus Christi on Sunday 19 June, but not with such a lavish liturgy.

Synod Representatives

The Archbishop has issued a mandate for St Andrew's to elect new Synod representatives due to the Kings' departure and Tony Cross' illness.

Synod is the governing body for the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne. It appoints people to the Archbishop-in-Council, to General Synod of the national church and to other Diocesan statutory committees. Annually there is a meeting partly in person ink the cathedral and partly by Zoom (or Teams) on-line. Our representatives play an important role in voting for motions that further the good governance of the Anglican Church in Melbourne.

If you would like to nominate then a form can be downloaded here.

Please speak to me if you haver any queries regarding this commitment which is principally for three sessions per year.

I have previously advised that the music foundation now has a corporate trustee and has entered into an agreement with Australian Pipe Organs Pty Ltd for the first stage of the organ restoration. Our Organ Fundraising Committee, under the auspices of Roger Pym, have been successful in raising over half of the funds needed for this work and is continuing their fundraising efforts and we thank them for this contribution to parish life, ensuring that our music continues.
