Pentecost 19

Vincent van Gogh, Vineyards with a View of Auver, 1853-1890
In this weekend's gospel, the Parable of the Wicked Tenants, Jesus uses the story of a landowner and rebellious farmers to confront the religious leaders of Israel. When asked what the landowner should do, his listeners answer that he will destroy the wicked tenants and rent the vineyard to others who will give him the fruit. The chief priests and Pharisees realise Jesus is telling this story against them. They want to arrest him, but they are afraid of the crowds who view Jesus as a prophet.

Sukkot

Mother Xeverie reports:
This week I had the privilege of attending the Festival of the Tabernacles (Sukkot) hosted by our local Jewish community. The theme of the evening echoed the words of Zechariah 14:16, reminding us that all nations are invited to come before the Lord and rejoice in His presence.
Bishop Ben Wong, the bishop of Nunawading, was also invited — now serving as the Multicultural Bishop, taking over the portfolio from Bishop Paul. His presence was warmly received, and it was wonderful to stand together as Christians supporting our Jewish brothers and sisters.
Despite the heavy rain, the event was remarkably well attended. The Jewish leaders expressed their heartfelt thanks to Fr Ian and to St Andrew’s for our ongoing support of their community.
