Guido Reni, Archangel Michael defeats Satan (1630-1635)

St Michael and All Angels

The Feast of St. Michael and All Angels, often called Michaelmas, celebrates the presence and power of God’s messengers. The word angel means “messenger,” and throughout scripture angels appear as agents of God’s will—sometimes visible, sometimes unseen—bringing guidance, strength, and protection. Christian tradition depicts them with wings for swiftness, swords for power, and radiant garments for enlightenment, though such imagery has sometimes caused skeptics to dismiss them as mythical. Of the many angels mentioned in the Bible, only four are named: Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, and Raphael. Chief among them, Michael is honoured as the defender of God’s people, the one who overcomes evil and brings peace at the end of life’s struggles.
