Presentation of Christ in the Temple
As devout Jews, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple to observe the Law of Moses, which required purification for the mother and consecration of the firstborn son 40 days after his birth. They offered the sacrifice of "a pair of doves or two young pigeons," indicating their modest means, as the law specified 'a lamb' if they could afford it.
In the Temple, the elderly, righteous Simeon, to whom the Holy Spirit had revealed he would see the Messiah, took Jesus, blessed God, and prophesied that Jesus was "a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel". Anna, an aged prophetess, also recognised Jesus, gave thanks to God, and spoke of the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.
