Ss Simon and Jude, Apostles and Martyrs

St Simon was called the Cananean or the Zealot (representing a strict Jewish national or religious group). Following Jesus' ascension, Simon preached the Gospel in Egypt, Cyrene, Libya, and later traveled and evangelized in Persia alongside St Jude. Tradition holds that he was martyred in Persia.

St Jude was also known as Thaddeus, or Judas son of James (as distinct from Judas Iscariot). He is traditionally considered a relative (cousin or brother) of Jesus. He preached in Judea, Samaria, Syria, Mesopotamia, Armenia, and Persia, where he was martyred in Persia around AD 65. He is widely venerated as the patron saint of hopeless causes, desperate situations, and impossible cases, partly to avoid confusion with Judas Iscariot.

Christian tradition holds that they were companions in missionary evangelisation and martyred together in Persia, which is why they share a feast day.
