St Matthew

Because he collected taxes from his fellow Jews for occupying forces, Matthew would have been widely despised and considered a sinner or traitor by the Pharisees and Jewish community. Jesus saw Matthew at the tax collector's booth and said, "Follow me," prompting Matthew to immediately leave his wealth and career behind. Matthew hosted a dinner at his house for Jesus, his disciples, and many other tax collectors and sinners, drawing criticism from the Pharisees who Jesus rebuked. Tradition attributes the first Gospel to him, written initially for a Jewish-Christian audience to show how Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecies.
