Pentecost 9

This Sunday's gospel encourages us to not fear, but to live with generosity and readiness for Christ's return. Jesus reassures his "little flock" that the Father is pleased to give them the kingdom. He urges them to sell their possessions and give to the poor, and so creating "unfailing treasure in heaven". The passage emphasizes the importance of being watchful and prepared, like servants waiting for their master's return from a wedding, ready to open the door immediately. The core message is that those who are ready and faithful will be rewarded when Christ returns.

The painting, The Light of the World (a copy of which hangs in the Lady Chapel), depicts Jesus knocking on the door. Our gospel reading points out that we be ready so that we may "open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks" because "the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect".
