Vicar's News - 2 August 2020

This Sunday at St Andrew’s Brighton is the ninth Sunday after Pentecost and in our video and Zoom services we hear St Matthew’s version of the feeding of the 5,000. Our video service also speaks to the image above – Rembrandt’s painting of Jacob wrestling with God (in the guise of an angel). We all wrestle with God or faith at some stage in our lives, often more than once. This period of COVID-19 is very trying and can lead us to question what God has in store for us.

This prayer by The Most Reverend Kay Goldsworthy AO, Archbishop of Perth may bring us some comfort and I offer it to you for inclusion in your prayers this week:

Lord Jesus Christ, healer and friend, come and care for all of us through the danger and uncertainty of the coronavirus epidemic.

To people who are sick, bring healing. To people who are displaced, isolated, or cut off from family, friends or work, bring comfort and companionship. Work with medical staff as they care for the sick, and protect them from harm.

Give skill and fruitful research to scientists as they work on treatments and a vaccine. To public health authorities, give wisdom to decide the best ways to manage both this crisis and our anxieties.

When communities are fearful,  give a calm spirit,  and kindness to neighbours and strangers. Through this testing time,  and through all the risks we face together, teach us once again how we can love one another as you have loved us. Amen.

Thank you to Gail Quilliam who has been working in the cemetery garden and in Garden of Remembrance. There are some beautiful flowers there and Gail’s tender care ensures that these areas look good as they receive just as many daily visitors during this COVID period as in normal times – perhaps more!

Details of our on-line services and bible studies can be found on our At Home @ St Andrew’s webpage, and please join us our ‘Catch up with the Vicar and friends’ on Wednesdays at 10.30am. You can join on line or by phone. If you need help connecting with us, call 0421 321 321.

If you would like a communion pack to participate in the sacrament of Holy Eucharist during our video services on Sundays or you need some face masks, then Click here or call 0421 321 321 for immediate delivery.

If you would like to read or lead intercessions during our video services, you are most welcome. We only have two people in the church during those video sessions so if you are able to come past during your weekly exercise, then please let me know.
